Literacy is the number one focus of our College. We believe that ALL students should reach their optimum level of literacy by Year 10 so that they will are well prepared for their desired pathway, be it VCE, VCAL and eventually the workforce.
Our explicit, targeted teaching of key literacy skills across all subjects enable our students to grasp concepts and ideas more successfully.
Development of literacy skills is the priority at Westall Secondary College. Therefore, all teachers-regardless of subject area-focus on literacy, ensuring the systematic and effective acquisition of fundamental knowledge and skills.
Academic vocabulary is taught explicitly, to ensure students are well prepared for VCE and VCAL in their senior years.
Literacy in all areas is developed through:
Daily review of academic and content (subject area) vocabulary at the start of each lesson
Explicit teaching of concepts, skills and comprehension strategies
Guided practice to improve fluency
Intensive intervention that targets students’ specific literacy needs
Multi-sensory approach (Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic) to teaching spelling rules
Vocabulary development ( one of the five major components of reading) using morphology instruction
